I gave up…. and google didn’t help me a bit.

  2. To the contestants: My source spelled “GROANIN MALT” in this way…..but….it would be more helpful to you if I used the proper spelling rather than the colloquial……Which would be “GROANING MALT”.

We seem to have one person who has resorted to Google. From an old dictionary: Sooner, 1. One who settles on government land before it is legally opened. 2. one who gains an unfair advantage by getting ahead of others. 3. native of Oklahoma.4. Big fat cheating S.O.B. who breaks the rules and uses Google.

Hay, it’s not me. Look it up in the dictionary.

Naw, I just pulled myself out of the contest.

  4. h-sooner, I guess you can get back in the game assuming you didn’t go to Google for the answer and promise not to use Google in the future…..ever again.

  5. Here’s my guess – Is it named groanin’ malt due to noises it makes during fermentation?…. Or could it be the noises a person makes after drinking it?…..

anon, sorry I wasn’t clear. I googled for the answer but didn’t really understand things until the spelling correction. By comment #1, I removed myself from the running, as I looked (cheated)!

  7. MR, I take it you’re not a beer drinker. Remember the thread on water or coke, although the infallible jek called me on that one being another urban legend.

  8. huskysooner, an honorable person, has removed himself from this round of Educational Quiz.

MRambler, the GROANING noise is on the right track but not from the fermentation or the drinker. This is old time stuff and will require some research. Try again.

  9. Here’s another guess for you, Anon….. How about the noise from the machinery used to process and bottle the beer?….. I am at a loss as to where you would look to find this info, so I think I’ll go have a beer or two and think about it…. I’ve talked to a few drunks, but they were no help…..

  10. MRambler, Nope. To find the answer go to the Way Back Machine…..back to old Europe. Here is a big hint…Groaning Malt was a gift on a special occasion. What was the occasion which is how the malt got it’s name ( I think).

Next week a new quiz and the answer to Groaning Malt.

Well, let’s see – somebody’s 30th, 60th, or 100th birthdays?…. uh…. Marriage?…. I know lots of people who are still groaning over that one….. Halloween is about the only other one I can think of…… I know, I know, I’ll find out next week….

  12. Getting closer, MRambler.

  13. #13 by MRambler

Last guess – it’s used during childbirth as an antiseptic and pain killer?….. The mother does the groaning…..

  14. MRambler, I guess I can award 10 points to a close answer. “GROANING MALT” was brought for the people who came to congratulate the husband on a birth. (Meanwhile the wife was yelling, “you did this to me”. Nothing about her getting any beer)

I will take it, but, it is up to you to award them since I wasn’t exactly on…. I did lose a few brain cells over it though….. Did they offer Obscure Historical Trivia 101 at the college you attended or did you just come by it naturally?…..

  16. I minored in Obscure Trivia.

Speaking of trivia. I’m thinking of running a whole series on “Worm Trivia”.

  17. MRambler, Tarn also guessed the correct answer Sat. at birthday party but you were first and she didn’t post. So….you get the points. (Me and jj still ahead)
