NFL Half Time: The Who

How come is it that the “CSI shows” use old rock and roll tunes. Is it because the copy rights have run out or is it because someone has noticed that the surviving rock bands (The Rolling Stone, Paul McCartney, The Who, and others) fill up stadiums every time they tour. This question came to me as I just happened to catch “The Who” live in concert. It took most of “Who Are You” for me to realise that I was watching the super bowl. I just have to ask why “The Who” and not some hip hop rap crap band. Maybe it’s because “The Who” have talent and they could time the music to the fire works very nicely. The lasers where used very nicely to. I see what Sunn (comment #2 “February 3, 1959) means about guitar solos he went a little nuts but at lest he has skills to show off with. I caught all of “Who Are You” very nice and all of “Won’t get Fooled Again” also very nice. I just wish that I had caught the whole thing.

  1. I saw the whole performance…… I didn’t count, but, I think they went though 5, maybe 6, Who classics…… Roger’s vocals was still spot on. Pete’s vocals and guitar playing were slightly erratic, but, still great….. After doing this for right at 50 years now, I thought they pulled it off in style….. These two are the only surviving members of the original group….. The drummer did a decent version of Keith Moon, and, the remaining musicians filled in perfectly……

All the rest of the music you heard during the Super Bowl (background and commercials) contained a large portion of Hip-Hop-Slap-Rap….. I’m still glad I watched it – The Saints won and The Who rocked…..

  2. Anyone notice the drummer? Zach Starkey. Classic.

  3. I love The Who, especially John Entwistle (RIP). I need to watch the performance again. My initial impression, listening to it in a room of chatting people, was that it was loosey-goosey and had a terrible feel. Townsend has always been one of the best rhythm players in rock, but man, he can’t solo for crap.

For these kinds of events, I wish they’d use someone a bit more contemporary, yet still good. I’m racking my brain thinking who would be appropriate.

  4. The next generation’s time will come soon.
You will get to see old geezers such as Journey,Van Halen, Metallica,AC-DC, etc. If we’re lucky maybe they can book Lady Ga(g) Ga(g) me next year.
The past few superbowls since the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake fiasco, we’ve had McCartney, Springsteen, Stones. I think the Who performed on par. The Stones were the only ones who failed to deliver the goods, in my opinion. I’d say pretty good for these musicians that are collecting social security.

  5. Robo, to answer your question. In a recent interview with the Executive Producer of the CSI Franchise Robert Bruckheimer. He Is a major Who Fan and when he was looking for theme music for the 1st CSI series he wanted just the instrumental part of Baba O’ Riley when he contacted the who’s publishing company and spoke with Pete Townsend he showed him the pilot episode. Pete not only gave his blessing for using the most of the song, he and Roger went into the studio and re recorded a version just for the show. As for the Halftime show, I listened to it on the radio and was pleasantly surprised. It is cool that Zac is playing drums and touring with Roger and Pete. It was surprising that the crowd didn’t go as crazy when they played “Wont Get Fooled Again” there in Miami as they did during the 08′ tour. I heard that on the Sat. Radio as well and when they did that song I thought the stadium would crumble to the ground.

  6. I rate their performance of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” almost as good as Terraplane’s cover of it in 1975 (Ha-Ha)….. Of course, I might be prejudiced somewhat…….

  7. MR, you were in a band that covered “Won’t Get Fooled Again”? Pretty impressive. That would be a difficult song to make sound right.

  8. If you can believe it, I even sang lead on it….. Since I don’t sing that much, and then mostly Blues, I was even surprised that it sounded as good as it does…… I have a recording of it made in a local OKC club….. I might post it as soon as I can find the disc – still unpacking and setting up the new MR HQ right now……

  9. I, for one, would be delighted to hear it.

  10. I have added it to my massive “to do” list…… I can’t say it will be soon, but, it won’t be a super long time….. Maybe somewhere in the medium long time frame…. We’ll just bill it as “Coming No Later Than Summer 2010 (Maybe sooner)”…… Glad to pin that down for you, Sunn….

  11. It’s funny you have all these grand plans of things you are going to do when you retire. Then, when it arrives, you do less than you did when you were working full time. One of the ironies of life, I suppose.

  12. It’s a known proven fact, at least in my world, that time goes faster when you reach retirement, therefore, you have less time to dive-in to those grand schemes than before, not alone get any of them finished!….. Time is definitely not linear – You have to watch it, or it will fold and warp on back on you…..

  13. time is fleeting.

  14. I have a friend who just attended a Robert Plant-Eric Clapton show in K.C. He said Plant’s voice was shot. However, Clapton & Jeff Beck are planning on a tour soon. That could be interesting.
Yes time is fleeting, the old rockers are fading fast.

  15. They may be fading, but, it still seems they are being constantly called upon to show the “new” generations the exact definition of Rock ‘n’ Roll…. They just released a new Hendrix album – “Valleys of Neptune” – 40 years after his passing, Jimi reaches out from the grave and proves he is still second to none….. A must for any music fan – It makes me want to pack-up my guitar and admit, “Yes, I know I play a bad guitar”……

It seems we don’t have adequate replacements for them as of yet….. Where will it all go when they finally retire?….. I don’t want to think about it……

  16. And you know how time fades…. time fades away.
Is it better to burn out, than to fade away?
    Depends on your mileage.
