Shel Silverstein

Remember Shel Silverstein? He was the guy that wrote some of the lyrics for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Anyways, if you’re a fan, here’s a cool link that animates some of his writings. www.shelsilverstein.com Then pick high or low bandwidth and then pick “Shel’s Books” and be prepared to be amused…..

  1. How does that go?… …Oh, yeah…. “Sylvia Cynthia Snout would not take the garbage out” and “The Cover of the Rolling Stone”…. Two of my favorites written by Shel Silverstein…….

  2. I couldn’t get to Shel’s page, Sunn, so I revised your post so it would work….. I hope you don’t mind….

  3. Not at all, MR. Did he also write “On the Cover of Rolling Stone”?

  4. I think I still have my copy of “Uncle Shelby’s ABZs” that I took to college. Same guy?

  5. anon, yes, one and the same.

  6. Yep, he wrote “On the Cover of the Rolling Stone”…. If you go to the link you furnished and click on “About Shel”, on the third page it states he wrote it for Doctor Hook…….

  7. Gotta love Shel. “Sara….Garbage Out” is the most memorable and favorite for me. Tarn fondly remembers “For Sale”, in particular the brother-for-sale bit.

  8. I have never gotten into any of Shel’s books, as they were more directed toward kids, I remember him for his songwriting credits, A Boy named Sue For Johnny Cash, Several for Roger Miller, and other Stars of the ’60’s and ’70’s.

  9. I didn’t realize he also wrote lyrics for Johnny Cash & Roger Miller. Makes perfect sense, though. I believe he also released a folksy-comedy album in the 70’s after his success with Dr. Hook. Thanks for the info j.j.

  10. I have that album entitled “Shel Silverstein” and Jek is right it is “Sara” not “Sylvia” who wouldn’t take the garbage out…. It’s on that album….. Of course, I’m still working off of memory and it’s been a long time since I’ve had that album out and listened to it……

  11. MR — Actually it’s both: “Sara Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” (from the Shel site).

  12. AND LET US NOT FORGET STAN FREEBERG!

Let’s don’t forget Uncle Shelby’s many contributions to Playboy. No one buys it just for the articles ya know.
