Military Unintelligence

In 1990 the U.S. Army accommodated its powerful political friends by letting select civilians take target practice on army ranges……. Only cost us $5 million in tax money….. Maybe when the next war starts, the generals could send some of their country club pals over to fight it…..

Seems only right to me…..

Another fortune cookie

You must quit procrastinating tomorrow.
I don’t write them I just post them.

“I’m so Glad, I’m Glad, I’m Glad”

From an old Cream song….. In my context – meaning “I’m so glad” to see some other people posting….. I was starting to get the Pink Floyd syndrome, wondering “Is there anybody out there”?……. (Besides Jek and I)……

I was about one bar (measure or pub, take your choice) and two E-Flats from shutting the whole crap-shoot down and becoming a Monk or a Monkee……

Gas, Why?

Can Anyone please tell me why gas is going up?. I Mean a real, logical answer.
I know what all the newsies say and what our Goverment is feeding us, but I was always taught that when you sell more of a product you can offer it at a cheaper price.
Most all other consumer goods are marketed under this economic theory, But the main reason that they are giving now is with the summer traveling season coming soon the demand is so that they will have to raise the price of oil. Why cant the corporate Fat Cats, make the same amount of profit off of more sales rather than trying (and Succeeding) to make more profit at once?.
Lets face it, OPEC is taking over this country one gas station at a time, Mean while I am sitting on the leases of 5 capped off wells in NW Texas that the Oil company says they can’t afford to pump out of. I guess that might eat into his bonus this week, after all one cant live on 50K a month!
And as for the need to refine newer and cleaner grades of fuels, and raising the prices for that, well I’m for the cleaning up of the planet and the atmosphere, but why every time that the EPA mandates something new does my profit drop? Two words, Corporate Greed.

Don’t worry about money. The best things in life are free.

Ride into an Oklahoma Tornado

I just heard on the news that Steve Green, the guy who built the “Tornado Attack Vehicle”, a Baja type car built to drive directly into a tornado, is offering a ride to the highest bidder on E-Bay…… The latest bid is $121,000…… He’s bringing the vehicle back to Oklahoma for the ride (of a lifetime?)….. Risky business to say the least…… I wonder why he doesn’t auction off more than one ride?……. Think there’s a chance there may not be anything left to ride in after the first one?……..

Hell, I’m dumb enough to go, just not rich enough…… Anyone got $121,000.01 they could loan me?…… I’m sure my life insurance policy will pay you back…….

Smart Thoughts about Stupidity

This one I should have posted on the 1st (April Fool’s Day)……. It’s a twist off of the old saying: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time.” Well, James Thurber, a writer, wrote the following, which I think is pretty close to the truth in our modern times…..

“You can fool too many of the people too much of the time.”

Bind fun – can’t see the outside from in

I’ve been working around a Bind problem for sometime now. Bind is a name server program used to resolve hostnames to IP addresses. For example, before your browser could display this post, your machine contacted your name server that in turn contacted my machine running bind to find out the IP address for this site’s web server, since only the name server on my machine and its backup are authoritative for www.mrambler.com. Now this doesn’t always happen because name servers cache name resolutions for a specified period of time. If you just visited yesterday, then your name server would have likely just responded with the IP address it gave you yesterday rather than bother to lookup and query mine. (All of this is, of course, somewhat simplified.)

Anyway, on to my trouble: I’ve only defined the mrambler.com zone in a public/external view. I also have an internal view to resolve hostnames for my internal network, none of which are in the mrambler.com domain. So when I try to look up mrambler.com from inside, I get a “can’t find mrambler.com: Server failed” error. Looking in the server log, I see “lame-servers: lame server resolving ‘mrambler.com’ (in ‘mrambler.com’?)”. Lame eh? A lame server is a server that should be authoritative for a domain but for some reason isn’t. So here’s what I think the problem is: My internal machine needs to resolve the mrambler.com name so it contacts my name server. My name server sees that it is receiving the request from an internal machine and thus allows the query. Now since that view doesn’t have mrambler.com as a zone, it performs a lookup. Now here’s the troublesome bit — that lookup is coming from my public IP address which is the same IP address that mrambler.com’s name server resolves to. So it is probably considered lame since a name server is requesting the name server of a domain that it is supposed to be authoritative for. (Got it?) Unfortunately I don’t know of a clean solution yet. I certainly don’t want to duplicate my zone files for both zones. Any ideas? Also, I welcome general name server questions.

Self-Inflicted Stupidity

When asked if whiskey made people able to perform tasks more effectively, Dr. William Osler explained, “No, it just makes them less ashamed of doing them badly.”

Enough is Enough!

I never thought I would say that I am ashamed to be an American….. I’ve always thought we, as Americans, lived in the greatest nation on Earth…. We are a free, compassionate, loving people, who consider ourselves as the protectors of Freedom and justice for the world… ….Or so I thought until the recent despicable chain of events going on at this very moment in Florida……

Terri Schiavo – What the Hell are we doing?….. We, as Americans, are starving a human being to death, in a hospital, in front of the entire world, and doing nothing about it…..

I don’t care about all the why’s, wherefore’s, and legal BS that led to this decision…… What I care about is how we, as a people, can actually let this happen…. Do you realize that if you starved your pet in this manner, you would be arrested?….. We treat mass murderers better!….. They are given a last meal of their choice, put to sleep so they feel no pain before they are injected with a lethal dose of drugs…. What the Hell did Terri Schiavo do to deserve this?…..

What we have done (and we, as a nation, MUST take the blame) is to condemn a human being to death…… Why don’t the judges, doctors, lawyers, politicians, and citizens admit this and execute her just as they would any other criminal (Oh, yeah, she’s NOT a criminal, I guess that’s the problem?)?… Instead, thay claim that by “pulling the plug” they are allowing this person to die a “natural” death….. I’m sorry, I don’t consider straving and dying of thirst as natural…. Why didn’t they just throw her out in the swamp somewhere and be done with it….

Can you image what it would be like to watch your son, daughter, or loved one slowly die in this manner?….. I think that I would probably be arrested for the actions I would take….

THINK ABOUT IT…….

Can’t pick house colors? Photoshop to the rescue.

Our neighbors painted their house yellow and are having trouble finding good accent colors. Besides going with the yellow, the accent color(s) can’t make the house look too much like the orangish one across the street. (We have a colorful neighborhood.) Anyway, I offered my budding photoshop skills. I basically selected like-color chunks of the original photo that I wanted to color change using the magic lasso and the magnetic selector. I then copied that chunk to a new layer. Finally I dupicated each of those layers and changed the color as desired. This enabled me to switch on and off various colors, allowing me to try different color combinations. Below you can see the original photo and 3 of the 8 variations I’ve made. If you have any ideas, feel free to send them my way.

Red Dwarf

Just finished watching series 5 and 6 of Red Dwarf which were just recently released on DVD…….. I already had series 1 thru 4…….. Thanx to Jek for getting me hooked on Red Dwarf…….. It’s the best Si-Fi comedy I’ve ever seen…… The DVD’s are loaded with lots and lots of extras and full-length commentaries by the stars……. In addition, Series 5 and 6 have trading cards and one episode each with an additional fan commentary track……. The fans were selected from some sort of contest……. Series 5 and 6 have even more complicated story plots, but are still just as funny (if not more so) and believeable as the first four….. On a scale of one to infinity, The BOB RATING is Infinity+1 (more or less)……. Rent ’em if you must, but I would suggest buying them as you will want to watch ’em over and over again…….. (and NO, I didn’t get paid for this review, but, if someone wanted to float a few Benji’s my way, I wouldn’t refuse)……

Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

In 1996, a Cambodian newspaper came up with a novel solution for England’s mad cow disease……. The paper suggested that England ship its diseased cattle to Cambodia, where they would be turned loose in the fields to blow up unexploded land mines……

Hobson’s Choice

We just got back from seeing “Hobson’s Choice” performed by the Exchange Theatre. They did an excellent job. There was quite a bit of energy in this old play. Basically it is about a man and his three daughters in 1880s Brittain. The man, Hobson, owns a shoe shop but is more or less owned by his daughters. The interesting thing about “Hobson’s Choice” is that he has no choice at all. The poor guy can’t get the upper hand, though the audience isn’t inclined to be sad for him. (It is a comedy you know.) Tonight all of the acting was dead on. Our friend, Dan, played the part of Will. It is sometimes hard to not “see” Dan when I go to his plays, but this time it was total immersion. Check it out this weekend if you can, as it is your last chance. See details at NWSource.com. Note that the convenient “Add to my calendar” links are provided by Tarn’s new company Trumba. You can easily add events like this to your Outlook, iCal, Hotmail, or Trumba served calendar. You can also have it send you a reminder message sent to you before the event occurs.

Courting Morons

In 1979, a man sued the Coors beer company for turning him into an alcoholic….. He claimed that Coors beer should have had a label printed on the can warning drinkers that it contained alcohol…..
