Dave Murray Signature Strat….

Here’s No. 2 of my 3 Strats that I now own…..  I actually traded my ’79 clear red Strat with all black accessories (except the tuners) for it plus I got a nice little bundle of bills to go with the trade…..  The red/black Strat was a rare one, American made, and played like a dream…..  I’ve been working on setting up this Dave Murray to replace it as my main axe……  Here’s what it looks like:

dmurray_strat

It was made in 2009 by Fender…..  It’s based on a ’63 body and ’57 neck…..  The pick ups are HOT, except for the ’57 Fender one in the middle…..  If you don’t know who Dave Murray (played with Iron Maiden) is and want to know more about the guitar follow this link:

I’m happy, but, with all the great instruments I’ve got now, I can’t blame any clunker’s on equipment failure (Ha!)……

  1. Just read the review, and as a bit of an Iron Maiden fan…COOL. Can’t wait to hear it.

  2. I have to admit, I don’t have any Iron Maiden on CD….. I think I may have a couple of vinyl LP’s….. As soon as I can afford it, I’m going to pick up an album or two where Dave is playing this particular Strat….. I have to admit, no longer than I’ve had it, and since I set it up the way I like my Strats, it plays as well, if not better, than my ’79 Strat, and, I thought, along with anyone who played it, that the ’79 was the greatest guitar on the planet….. The Dave Murray Strat gives you so much more when amplified due to the different pick ups – You can Radically change the sound with the flip of a switch…… Of course, I have one more classic Strat that has a long story to it, and it’s a Killer of guitar too….. Next Music Post…..

  3. Yeah, we’ll be waiting for the Maiden covers.

  4. I think I’ve been challenged!….. First, I’ve got to get some Iron Maiden albums with Dave Murray playing this Strat on them, and then we’ll see if there’s anything there that I would want to cover (I’m sure there is – I’m just trying to give myself an out, just in case my old fingers can’t cut it – Of course, I’ve already opened my big mouth on doing a Hendrix cover, so I guess I’m in over my head before I start)…… Just wait until I post the other Strat I have….. The hole I’m digging will get a lot deeper!…..

  5. Unless you’ve changed a *lot*, MR, IM is pretty far outside your comfort zone.

  6. I’m going take that comment, HS, as to mean my taste in music as opposed to being about my ability to play it (Ha!)….. Like I said, Ii’s been a long time since I’ve heard Iron Maiden and apparently I didn’t listen that close….. Surely, if it’s a musical taste thing, they have at least one song that I might be interested in…. Of course, I really haven’t officially committed myself to doing an IM cover, have I …. eh?…… (There’s always an out if you look hard enough!)…… Right now we’re really busy recording…. Still playing with the surviving members of Terraplane from the ’70’s, doing new stuff, and, also jamming and recording with a couple of other friends from way back when….. Lots of different kinds of music….. Mainly avoiding Hip-Hop, Rap, new C&W, and some, but not all, Headbanger, ultra Heavy Metal, and Acid Rock……

  7. How about this, HS?….. Since Dave Murray obtained the Strat in question from Paul Kossoff of the band “Free”, why don’t I just do a cover version of “All Right Now”?…… (Ha!)….. That one’s definitely to my musical liking….. (There’s always a way, He-He)……

  8. First of all, HS, thanks for the link….. Fender did a great job of reproducing the Black Strat of Dave Murray’s and I love the one I have….. Lots of good shots of it, and I do like the song, BUT, second of all, what did I ever do to you, unless all their songs are faster than the speed of light, and, if they’re not, you certainly pulled out all the stops – I’m not sure my fingers can move that fast, but, if that’s the song you’re challenging me with – SO BE IT!….. (H-m-m-m, let’s see, learn the licks at half speed, then record them at full speed, he’ll never know – OH, did I write that out loud?)……

Yeah, lots of good shots of Murray and that guitar in the video.

I dunno, this is a pretty typical IM song, especially the fast galloping.

  10. Believe me, Fender did a great job of reproducing it – It plays like “Butter” (a nickname that EC, a friend we’re doing an album with right now, calls any guitar that really plays smooth)….. HS, do you have any cover recommendations of any particular IM song that you like?….. Like I said, and I hate to admit it, because I do like a broad base of different kinds of music, that I have no IM on hand….. I do really like the song you uploaded, but, I’m would like to hear some of their albums and then make a decision…. Of course, you may be on S.S. by the time I get it down (Ha!)…..

The first thing my friend asked is why the heck someone not into Maiden would be interested in a DM-signature guitar. Good question, eh? 🙂

This guy is guru of all things IM and admits that his favorites aren’t the mainstream albums. He says most fans say the classic IM albums are “Number of the Beast” and “Piece of Mind,” which are the ones I know. His favorites are “Fear of the Dark” (1992) and “Brave New World” (2002). I don’t know either of his favorites.

  12. Let’s just say the guitar is phenomenal, to say the least….. Yes, being a DM signature guitar, to me, is a bonus, I bet I’ll find some interesting IM stuff that I’ll like….. But, the main thing is the guitar’s set-up….. Man, with the array of pick-ups on it, you can go from a sweet vintage Fender sound to a head-banging lead with lots of treble or bass at the flip of the pick-up switch….. Believe me, you can play any kind of music on this guitar without a problem – Plus I like Black and I like Maple Necks…. It was a no-brainer for me….. Cool, I’m into the non-mainstream stuff myself….. Thank your Guru friend for the suggestions and I’ll let you know how it goes….. Hope he won’t be mad that I will be playing all kinds of different music on it….. As an after-thought, HS, I think you might be impressed in the direction we’ve gone with Terraplane…. Just now finishing up the “Moonlit Whispers” album…. I’ll send you a copy when it’s done or a link to download it, if we go digital album only….. Also, I think you would enjoy our previous album called “Jupiter Effect”….. Ask Jek about them if you want – He sits in on some keyboard parts on both of them……
