  1. Hmmmm. A FB friend of mine and I have had an interesting discussion about this top-100 list of guitarists:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-guitarists-20111123

I don’t generally like top-XX lists, and Rolling Stone is garbage, but this list stimulated some discussion. It had Hendrix first, too.

  2. I couldn’t agree more.

  3. I’m not sure I agree, but I don’t know that I could make the case for another guitarist, either.

The list is pretty good and includes Fripp, Alex Lifeson, and Mark Knopfler. Pagey shouldn’t be #2 and Keith Richards is ranked way too high (sorry MR). And lots of talentless hacks (from a guitar point of view) like Kurt Cobain. No Steve Howe, Steve Hacket, Alan Holdsworth, or David Torn.

  4. No, HS what I agree with is your comments on rolling stone, and lists in general. I most certainly do not agree with the RS list. One must remember music is a personal choice, and professional music critics usually do not have any musical ability.

  5. I feel that the list is tainted being associated with rolling stone. I wonder what the voting would have been like done by another outlet. I say this because the voters listed, excluding the RS persons are some of the best guitarists alive today!.

  6. I agree with you, HS….. Keith Richards should definitely not be ranked #4… His spot should be taken by Frank Zappa, who is shown as #22…. I also agree that there is a bunch of players listed that shouldn’t be there…. One guitarist that I think should be included along with the guitarists you list in comment #3, HS, is Jesse Ed Davis….. I think their list is tainted by known Hit Records and NOT the talent or originality of the guitarist…..

  7. Another one they missed is Mick Taylor – The Stones were at their best when he was playing lead guitar with them….. His solo albums really demonstrated his originality and technical ability…..

How in the hell can you put Joni Mitchell in the “Top 100”?…. She’s a bad enough singer (that’s not a compliment), and, a worse guitar player….. A good candidate for Remedial Guitar 101…..
