Help Needed

My problem is this:
I have a 5 year old IMac, on this I have lots of data and music saved upon.
I need a way to transfer all that I have saved on the Mac to my PC, or burn it to discs using the burner in my Laptop.
I really do not want to buy a stand alone burner to accomplish this, is there some type of cable or program that will help out?

  1. Does it have a network interface? (a place to plug in a network cable)? If so, then you could connect both machines to a hub and move data between them that way, perhaps. Although that Mac is probably running OS9, so I don’t know exactly how that would be accomplished, it’s just an idea.

  2. You have to excuse my ignorance, what is a network cable?
It has usb ports, a phone jack and a ethernet port. thats about all I know about it.

  3. I recently purchased a USB External Drive (100 Gig) for $70. I bought it specifically to back up files on my other computers. A lot simpler than burning to several cds, which I’ve done in the past.

  4. Your ethernet port is where you would plug in a network cable.

  5. I’ve been thinking about this a little more. Considering your knowledge level, I think perhaps the best thing to do is to pay someone to transfer your data and let them work out the details. You will probably save yourself time, money and frustration.

Or alternatively, find an electronics store with a good return policy, buy an external burner (DVD, if you could find one that your Mac will support — it’s capacity is about 8x that of a CD) burn and move your data over the weekend and then return the burner. Although this is probably ethically questionable, so use your best judgement 🙂

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), you could possibly upload your data to a central location, then download it onto the new computer, but the transfer could take quite a long time depending on how much data you’re moving. The upload would take particularly long.

  6. I allready have a 100 meg zip drive, I have approx. 3.5 Gig of data to transfer.

  7. You are going to grow old if you attempt to transfer 3.5 gigs using a 100MB zip drive.

  8. Question: Why are you going to the Windows world? I’ve just recently moved to Mac. We have a Mac Mini and are enjoying the heck out of it.

That said, I recommend getting a USB file transfer cable. Check out the IOGear’s GUN161 SmartLink File Transfer Cable (USB to USB). Best Buy has it listed for $27.

  9. As I said when I was up, I would just as soon stay with my iMac but we got a laptop that is windows based I just need to get all of the files off of the Mac so I can wipe the HD and start over with OS10 Also I will be using the Mac for primarily audio stuff and the Laptop for everyday use, Eventually I am going to purchase an PowerBook G4 and then this laptop will be just for backup, so therefore I am just taking a Short vacation form Steve Jobs Land. Thanx for the info on the cable.
