Music Please……..

Since I don’t have Sat Radio, I don’t listen to internet radio because I have a slow dial-up connection, and OKC doesn’t have any Alternative or Progressive radio stations, can anyone give me suggestions on any new groups and/or albums in the Yes, Moody Blues, King Crimson vein?…….. Or, let me know if any exist……..

Classic Rocker (Me) willing and wanting to expand/update my musical ear…… (Although an open E-flat tuning gets me by most of the time)

  1. First off, each of those groups are still producing albums, except for maybe KC (what is going on with Fripp these days anyway?) so you can naturally check those out.

Try Kaipa and The Flower Kings for bands that sound similiar to Yes sans vocals. Pretty much anything by them will do. In the Kansas-prog vein try Spock’s Beard‘s album “V” and Magellan‘s “Impossible Figures” album. For Pink Floyd meets Rush try Porcupine Tree. Their new album, “Deadwing”, is darn good, though I prefer their live album “Coma Divine” from the 90s. For the Genesis in you, try Marillion. HuskeySooner will probably do a better job at recommending for them than I can.

If you’re really feeling brave, try buying something randomly from the Aural Moon playlist. They have tons of great prog to choose from.

Dropped-D is where it’s at, man!

I’ll second the Porcupine Tree recommendation with much gusto. I’ve been listening to the last two CDs (“Deadwing” and “In Absentia”) a lot over the last few months. I hear influences of Pink Floyd, KC, Moody Blues, Genesis, Alan Parsons Project, XTC, and Tool. It’s really top-notch, incorporates an increcibly wide array of styles, and is very well produced.

I’m not a hardcore Marillion fan, but “Brave” is pretty good.

MRambler’s not a metalhead, but I’d be remiss in not mentioning Tool. Except for the drummer, they are not flashy musicians, but you can really hear the KC influence. It’s quality.

As far as just rock, I haven’t heard much recently I like. I still spin Soundgarden sometimes and love the modal, Zep-pish aspect in some of their later songs. They broke up in 1997, though.

Of course, Rush is still putting out albums. The most recent one is OK but sounds like absolute doo-doo. It sounds so bad that it’s almost unlistenable.

I’ll save my Dave Matthews Band guilty pleasure for some other discussion.

  3. Co-o-ol…. I guess I’m off to Best Buy when I get back to Oklahoma (I’m in their “Reward Zone” you know)….. I know Jek just loves to hear that…….

Anymore musicial sugguestions out there?…… I’m all ears……
