I was listening to Eggman the last 2 days and the topic of choice is the controversy surrounding the singing of the National anthem at Sooner games. Now it has been over 30 years since I set foot inside Owen Stadium for a game but I hear the new thing is at the end of the Star Spangled Banner the crowd says The Home of the Sooners. The proper words are The Home of The Brave. Some are saying that it’s no big deal but I disagree. The Song is the official song of the nation, our National anthem. It has lyrics that mean something, And many of our fellow citizens went to foreign lands and made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could have the freedom to sing that song.
\nNow some say “It’s just a song, one word doesn’t matter” But it Does. It is disrespectful to the memory to those that fought and died for our freedom to change the words.
\nUniversity President Boren, and Head Coach Stoops have asked the fans not to sing that way but it seems to go on.
\nI say Just because we have the right, does not mean it’s right to do. Now this weekend we play the Air force academy in Norman, I hope that the over zealous half drunk fans at the game can realize that this might be offensive to others and sing it right.
\nNow don’t get me wrong I hope we send the AF Players back to Colorado Springs mourning their loss but lets show them that we have some class in doing it.
